When Yuvi’s wife finds him in his underwear, standing on top of his desk, she isn’t particularly impressed with his writing habits. But Yuvi worries. He has a wife who wants things he can’t give her, an editor who wants a book he can’t deliver, a brother-in-law whose gastrointestinal disease may lead him to a morbid end, and dead parents who, well, they don’t really want anything, but that doesn’t stop the memory of them from haunting him.
As the structure of Yuvi’s novel falls apart, so do his life and marriage.
His novel and his life blend together as Yuvi struggles to pull out of the mess. He travels from his suburban Jewish childhood in Atlanta to the North Carolina mountains of his father’s youth, to several hospital waiting rooms, to the living room of a grieving Palestinian man, and even to Uranus (and back, of course).
Heartbreaking and hilarious, A Brilliant Novel in the Works is the utterly original debut novel from Yuvi Zalkow, praised by Cheryl Strayed as “the secret love child of the smartest person you’ve ever met and the weirdo who lives down the block.”
Yuvi Zalkow’s stories have been published in Glimmer Train, Narrative Magazine, Carve Magazine, and others. He received an MFA from Antioch University. He lives in Portland, OR and is hard at work on his second novel.
“Mines the territory between heartbreak and hilarity… You must read this.” — Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild, Torch, and Tiny Beautiful Things.
“If you buy just one book this year, consider resting this book on top of it. Yuvi Zalkow is a writer I’m going to watch from a safe distance.” — Gary Shteyngart, author of Super Sad True Love Story and Absurdistan.

I enjoyed this novel so much. Kooky and experimental it thoroughly entertained me. Zalkow has a unique voice. I was impressed that the novel doesn't read like anything else I've read. Yes, there are other quirky, experimental books, of course, and I've read quite a few, but this voice... It's courageous in its willingness to be different and yet trust that readers can identify and empathize. I did, despite being nothing at all like this character, the writing succeeded in drawing me in and feeling life through "Yuvi's" eyes. I hope the author writes another book.Product details

A Brilliant Novel in the Works edition by Yuvi Zalkow Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
So one of the pleasures of being a reader AND a writer is that sometimes you get to read books before they "officially" come out. Yuvi is a grad school colleague of mine and I just finished "A Brilliant Novel." Generally when a friend or colleague sends me a book and maybe it isn't my cup of tea or isn't in the realm of my aesthetic, I send them back a hearty congratulations and tell them something I enjoyed about the book. If I love a book, I go public. So here I am typing up my love for this quirky, existential (and yes brilliant) little novel that will leave you with a smile on your face and a twist in your heart.
The character Yuvi is writing a novel and how do you write a novel when the world is hard and terrible and frightening and other people are enigmas and you are mystified by everything that happens? And your wife might be having an affair and your brother-in-law, who is one of your favorite people in the world, might be dying? How do you draft a novel to try to make sense of why parents die, why people stay married, why the arc of our sexual desire rises and falls and our shame at the things that excite us is so strong and yet restrained (pun intended)? Evidently you write the novel by standing on your desk and looking down at it... and you write it one page at a time.
A novel for thinkers, depressives, Jews, Gentiles, writers and anyone else who has ever been mystified on how to live on when so much is taken from us every day.
It's hard to say if this is one of my favorite books as a writer or reader. It's so deeply satisfying from my perspective as a writer. It captures the relative suffering writer's go through with such deep humor and provides such a 'can't put down' read at the same time. The emotional truth of the book mostly sears to the bone, but for the kind of laughter the book provides, it's worth a few burnt bones. Anne Mendel Etiquette for an Apocalypse
I tend to dislike fiction, but I loved this book. I read it all in one afternoon, some of it in the bath.
Don't think; just buy this book.
Fantastically written. Fluid and energetic. Makes you feel like a normal sane person.
Like when I watched the Book of Morman I felt guilty for a laughing so much. The topics this book covers are very deep but the way they are described is so funny you can't help but giggle. The author writes with such description and heart that it is difficult to put down.
Rawly human, hilarious and heartbreaking, this book pulls you in and gently blows your mind. Yuvi gets you from the first line and unfolds his story in intimate and quietly surprising whispers.
On the surface this is a simply written book about a neurotic mess of a man named Yuvi, a man hounded by insecurity, plagued with dysfunction, and haunted by the novel he's already been paid an advance to complete. Pull back a little and discover a world where the lines between reality and fantasy, normal and nonsensical aren't just blurred, they're non-existent in our non-hero's kaleidoscope life. Nothing is off the table, yet nothing is gratuitous. It truly is "A Brilliant Novel in the Works."
